How 48 Nations, 104 Matches & 3 Legends Are Rewriting Football History in the USA
The biggest World Cup in history is live. Right now. And it is already delivering.
The 2026 FIFA World Cup runs from June 11 to July 19, with a record 48 national teams competing across the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Moreover, matches are being played across 16 stadiums in 16 cities, with the final set for the New York New Jersey Stadium on July 19.
This is not just a bigger World Cup. It is a completely different one.
Why This World Cup Is Unlike Any Before It
For the first time, 32 teams advance out of the group stage — not 16. The top two from each of the 12 groups go through, plus the eight best third-place finishers. This sends them into a brand new Round of 32.
Additionally, FIFA has created two separate pathways to the semifinals. This prevents the top-ranked teams from meeting before the final. Spain and Argentina are in opposite halves. So are France and England.
In short, a giant cannot crush another giant until the very end. That is a massive format change.
